Hello Students and Parents!
As a repair technician working with Acadamia, I see a lot of computers in my store for repair. The most common issues I see are viruses and spyware.
I know our students love to go to those download spots to get music, video, and many other things that make the internet great. As an Acadamia student you’re limited to just your lessons. So it’s understandable that you get excited when you get your tutoring hours done, the Netblocker is removed, and the laptop is yours! Wow what an achievement!
Now here comes the fun part! The Netblocker is removed and you start surfing the internet, and find yourself going to music sites, video sites and more. The problem with most of these sites is that they are virus and spyware infected. What does that mean? Well, once you get the virus there is a special procedure to remove it, which may cost your parents money. Not good huh?
To stop those viruses from infecting your computer, the recommendation is to simply not go there.
Here are a few download sites to stay away from:
-Frostwire
-Limewire
-any P2P download site (sharing sites)
-Torrent sites
Besides causing harm to your computer, there are also legal ramifications to downloading from these sites. Believe it or not, it’s illegal to download “free” music, or pirated games and movies. Yes, there are a lot of people doing it, but that doesn’t make it OK. Have good sense and stay away from those sites and you can keep your computer clean from being infected from viruses.
You can still enjoy the internet! Anywhere you go to PURCHASE music or movies is not only OK, but safer for your computer. You can purchase these items at places like iTunes, Amazon, or any brand name (recognizable) store’s website. If you are not sure about the site, then you may want to stay away from it.
ONE SIMPLE RULE… if it’s FREE, then the chances of getting infected are highly likely.
Thanks
Rick
